Sebastian Mühl, *1981, arbeitet als Kunstwissenschaftler und Kunsttheoretiker in Berlin und Dresden. Sein Interesse gilt den politischen Dimensionen künstlerischer Praxis und insbesondere den politisch-ästhetischen Implikationen zeitgenössischer Modernerezeption. Von 2013 bis 2017 arbeitete er an einer Dissertation zum Utopiebezug in der Gegenwartskunst. Die Doktorarbeit wurde im Mai 2018 an der Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach verteidigt und erscheint im Herbst/Winter 2019 im Transcript-Verlag. Das Projekt untersuchte modernologische, partizipationsästhetische und kunstaktivistische Ansätze in der bildenden Kunst seit den 1990er Jahren. In seinen praktischen Projekten beschäftigt sich Sebastian Mühl mit dem Bild der Moderne im filmischen Register der Gegenwartskunst. In video- und filmkünstlerischen Arbeiten setzt er sich mit den politisch-ästhetischen sowie den gebauten Utopien der Moderne auseinander. Zu den Themen seiner theoretischen und praktischen Arbeit gibt Sebastian Workshops, hält Vorträge und publiziert.
Sebastians Dissertation wurde von der Philosophin Prof. Dr. Juliane Rebentisch betreut, deren Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter er von 2013 bis 2017 war. Im Frühjahr 2015 absolvierte er das Meisterschülerstudium bei Prof. Astrid Klein an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig. Zuvor studierte er bildende Kunst und Medienkunst an der HGB Leipzig und diplomierte dort im Juli 2012 mit einer filmpraktischen Arbeit sowie einer theoretischen Arbeit zu Jacques Rancière (Betreuung Prof. Astrid Klein, Dr. Ralf Hartmann und Prof. Dr. Beatrice von Bismarck). Er hat zeitweise an der University of Arts in London studiert und ein B.A.-Studium der Philosophie an der HfPh München absolviert. Sebastian hat an zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland teilgenommen, u.a. im Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig, im Kunstverein Tiergarten – Galerie Nord, Berlin und im CAC Passerelle Brest. Seit 2006 arbeitet er projektbasiert mit dem Videokünstler und Szenographen Stefan Hurtig zusammen.
Von 2018 bis 2019 war Sebastian Senior Scientist (Postdoc-Assistent) am Institut für Kulturanalyse, Abteilung Visuelle Kultur (Prof. Dr. Anna Schober-de Graaf) an der Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. Er ist Dozent am Fachbereich Kunst und Design der Hochschule für Künste Bremen. Seit 2020 arbeitet Sebastian als Digital Curator an den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden.

Sebastian Mühl, *1981, is an art theorist and researcher based in Berlin and Dresden. His research focuses on the political dimensions of contemporary art practices and on the politico-aesthetic implications of artistic perceptions of modernity. In 2017, he completed a phd thesis on notions of utopia in contemporary art. The project was an art theoretical research into modernolocical, participatory and art activist strategies since the early 1990s. His films and film-based visual art projects focus on the effects of the politico-aesthetic and the built utopias of modernity.
From 2013 to 2017, Sebastian was a Research Assistent at Offenbach University of Art and Design, where his thesis was supervised by philosopher Prof. Dr. Juliane Rebentisch. In Spring 2015, he completed a „Meisterschüler“ programme supervised by Prof. Astrid Klein at Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts. He studied Fine Arts and Media Arts at HGB Leipzig where he graduated in 2012 (supervision by Prof. Astrid Klein, Dr. Ralf Hartmann and Prof. Dr. Beatrice von Bismarck). He studied at the University of Arts London and received a B.A. in Philosophy at HfPh München. Sebastian exhibited internationally, e.g. Museum of Fine Arts Leipzig, Kunstverein Tiergarten – Galerie Nord Berlin and CAC Passerelle Brest.
From 2018 to 2019, Sebastian hold a position as Senior Scientist at the Institute for Cultural Analysis, Division of Visual Culture, at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt. He is Lecturer at the Department of Art and Design at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. In 2020, Sebastian took a position as a Digital Curator at the Dresden State Art Collections.
