In the last ten years, artistic research has become a new avant-garde practice in the visual arts. With regard to the dissolution of artistic limits, research-oriented practices have increasingly challenged the once inflexible boundaries between art and science. But artistic research has not only negated established notions of scientific knowledge. Rather, it also challenged art criticism and the values inherent to the aesthetic judgment of art. Regarding contemporary theories of aesthetic experience, the claims of artistic research can be criticised as contradictory. While they tend to rely on the production of knowledge through artistic forms, the aesthetics inherent in aesthetic form tend to undermine any conceptualization.
